Wow! Is it spring already? It sure
seems like winter was extremely short. With
almost no snow to speak of, all our animals made it
through in good body condition! Spring is here
with everything blooming and the beauty of God's
creation is all around.
We are truly blessed as a family to be able to
care for and provide a quality product for ourselves
as well as all of our customers. As we move
forward this year the question is always what will
the year hold in store? The short answer is
nobody knows for sure. We can make it as good
a year as possible.
The things we do know, drought in the Midwest has
affected beef prices. Beef prices are at
levels not seen before. Unfortunately, the
national cattle herd is at the lowest level since
1956. This means higher prices for several
years to come as producers attempt to retain some of
their heifers to begin building herd numbers again.
We also know hay prices have increased as well.
Again, due to droughts in the Midwest, hay supplies
are at critical levels. The amount of hay
being produced by a number of states not affected by
the drought is not enough to supply local demands
much less trying to ship hay to drought stricken
states. When buying hay this year, make sure
to check quality and ensure you know where your hay
is coming from. Just because you can buy
$2.00/bale hay, does not mean the quality of the hay
will allow your animals to survive.
